The integrated circuit (IC) discipline at Southeast University traces its origins to the Semiconductor discipline established in 1958. In December 2003, the university founded the nation’s first School of Integrated Circuits to lead the development of China’s inaugural batch of national IC talent training bases. The School later operated jointly with the School of Electronics, building upon Electronic Science and Technology, a national Double First-Class discipline at Southeast University that received the highest rating in the most recent round of China’s Discipline Evaluation. In 2021, Southeast University was approved to establish one of China’s first-level disciplines in Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering. The School of Integrated Circuits became an independent entity in 2022, conducting talent cultivation and scientific research across both its Nanjing and Wuxi campuses.
ICs constitute a foundational, leading, and strategic industry essential to national economic and social development. Focusing on the frontiers of IC disciplines and targeting critical bottlenecks that constrain the industry, the School breaks down disciplinary barriers, strengthens cross-disciplinary integration, achieves breakthroughs in key core technologies, and cultivates high-level talents in urgent national demand, thereby supporting the independent and innovative development of China’s IC industry. The discipline of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering focuses on the scientific frontiers of ICs and major industrial needs. It is committed to solving core scientific and engineering problems in IC materials, devices, design, manufacturing, and system integration, promoting the organic integration of fundamental and applied research, and strengthening breakthroughs and applications of key and generic technologies. The School has a dedicated IC faculty team that has long worked on the frontlines of education and research, possessing rich teaching and research experience. It currently has 87 full-time faculty members, including 35 national-level talents. A number of scholars hold important positions in academic organizations and professional institutions both at home and abroad. In addition, nearly 150 industry professors and off-campus supervisors have been appointed to jointly guide students in their scientific research and practical training.
The School hosts three national-level and three provincial-level research platforms. In recent years, its research in low-power chips, high-efficiency intelligent chip design, MEMS design tools, and other fields has reached internationally advanced levels. Independent and controllable mid-to-high-end intelligent power chips have achieved technological innovation, industrial implementation, and global market expansion. The School has led the effort in winning four national science and technology awards and eight first prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels. It has cultivated a large number of industrial leaders and high-end innovative talents, making outstanding contributions to the high-quality development of China’s IC industry.
